Sam Houston National Forest is an outdoor-lovers paradise! Nature enthusiasts enjoy fishing, hiking, and bird watching year round. A portion of the award-winning 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail weaves its way through the Forest, offering hikers everything from a dayhike to extended overnight treks. The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park opened on April 21, 2011. The flag park features a bronze statue of a common soldier surrounded by the 13 flags flown as Texas fought for and won her independence during the Texas Revolution.  Also of special historical interest are the sketches done by Charles B. Stewart, who in 1997 was officially recognized by the state Legislature as the Lone Star flag's designer.
